What Causes Odor

What are common household odors and how does our sense of  smell work?  What is an odor eliminator compared with an air freshener?

Our readers ask these questions all the time. I’ve tried to provide answers with links for more information on how to eliminate odors, difference between regular charcoal and activated charcoal and some other tips on absorbing smells and eliminating odors. 

Here is the simple definition of odor from Wikipedia – “An odor or odour is caused by one or more volatile chemical compounds.  Odors are also smells, which can refer to both pleasant and unpleasant odors.  The terms fragrance, scent and aroma are used primarily by industry to describe a pleasant odor while terms such as malodorous, stench, reek and stink are used to describe unpleasant odors”

The largest group of household odors consist of organic compounds, although some inorganic substances such as ammonia are considered odorants.    For humans to smell  something, molecules from that item need direct contact with your nose.  Everything that you smell gives off molecules whether the odor is pleasant or unpleasant.   Typically, these molecules are very light and volatile, meaning that the odor molecules can evaporate easily and also can travel or float through the air to your nose.

Inside your nasel passages are special neurons with hair like projections called cilia.  When an odor molecule comes in contact with these cilia, this binding triggers the neuron in a way that sends a message to your brain which you then perceive as a smell.  

How can you safely and effectively eliminate odors?
There are different ways in which you can deal with household odors.   One way involves covering up or masking the odor with yet, a stronger odor.  This treatment is most common with scented air fresheners, plug-ins, gels and sprays. However the underlying odor will still be present.    Other products are designed to actually neutralize and eliminate the odor. Common products include baking soda and activated charcoal.  Another advantage of these odor eliminators are that they are fragrance free and also great for people with chemical sensitivities and allegic reactions to some fragrances.     Baking soda can be effective in eliminating some odors, particularly those smells that are ”acidic”.   Activated charcoal (often called activated carbon) on the other hand has the ability to neutralize a wider range of odors and it’s unique microscopic configuration allows for a very large capacity to absorb a great volume of odor molecules.
