History of Coupons and Special Family and Friends Offer

Companies have been using coupons to help market and promote their products for over 100 years.  But, how did the use of cents off  coupons actually start?

The term “coupon” was derived from the french word “couper” meaning “to cut”.   In 1894, Atlanta businessman and co-owner of a small  beverage company called Coca-Cola , Asa Candler made an  innovative decision when he created the first coupon by using handwritten  tickets as coupons for a free glass of Coca-Cola to help market this new soft drink.  His company employees distributed the coupons as well  as placed in magazines.   To offset the cost to fountain shops, the company gave away free syrup to cover the costs of the free drinks.    It is estimated that over the next 20 years, 1 in 9 Americans have received a free Coca-Cola.

Shortly after Coca-Cola introduced it’s coupon idea, a grocer named C.W. Post began using coupons to help sell groceries.  His coupon gave customers a one cent discount on his latest cereal – Grape Nuts.

My, have times changed.   Coupons are so much part of our life and shopping culture now, in addition to traditional media outlets such as newspapers and magazines, coupons are now available downloaded from the internet and are referred to by such names as discount codes, promotion codes, shopping codes, source codes and a variety of other terms.
